Kombucha Subscriptions

Kombucha Subscription Development on Shopify

Kombucha subscription development on Shopify is the process of building custom subscription systems for kombucha brands: build-a-box flavor selection, custom delivery cycles, pre-renewal swap windows, and subscriber self-service portals. Standard subscription apps handle simple repeat orders well. Kombucha brands need flavor choice, delivery timing, and swap cutoffs that go beyond what those apps provide out of the box.

As a Shopify agency for kombucha brewers and DTC beverage brands, we build these systems through custom Shopify subscription development, so flavor selection, delivery cycles, and swap windows match how you brew and ship.

  • You sell kombucha on Shopify and subscriptions drive your recurring revenue
  • Customers want to choose their flavors rather than receive a fixed selection
  • You need delivery cycles that match your brewing and bottling schedule
  • Customers need to swap flavors before their next delivery without cancelling
  • Your current app doesn't support the subscription logic your business needs

The Real Problem

Where Standard Subscription Apps Fall Short for Kombucha Brands

Kombucha subscriptions aren't simple repeat orders. Flavor choice, brewing cycles, and swap windows need logic built around your operation.

Customers want to choose flavors for each delivery

Your customers don't want the same two flavors every delivery. They want to choose, or swap, before each order ships. Out of the box, apps offer basic box-building and product swaps. Letting subscribers update a flavor mix for each delivery, inside rules you set and without billing errors, takes custom work.

Swap windows should close when you start brewing

You need to lock orders 48 hours before renewal so you can batch your brewing and fulfillment. By default, subscribers can usually edit right up to the moment they are billed, which leaves your team guessing. A cutoff that matches your batch schedule is custom logic.

Delivery cycles should follow your production schedule

You brew on a specific schedule. An app lets you set an interval, such as every 14 days, but it counts from the day each customer signed up. When billing fires on the wrong date relative to your batch, you either ship early or charge customers before you've started brewing.

Box rules need to hold on every order

A box of 14 units, split as 7 each of two chosen flavors, is a simple idea for your customers. Standard box-builders let customers pick items, but enforcing a split like this as a single subscription unit, on every renewal, takes custom rules.

Standard App vs Custom Build

What a Standard App Does Out of the Box, and What We Build

Where a standard subscription app setup stops, and what a custom build adds for kombucha.

What We Build

What We Build for Kombucha Brands

Custom subscription logic designed around how your kombucha business operates.

Flavor-Select Box Subscriptions

Customers choose their flavor combination at signup and can update it before each delivery. The selection is stored against the subscription, so changes apply correctly without breaking billing or creating duplicate subscriptions. We built this build-a-box flow for Bitchin’ Boucha on Recharge, with custom logic on top.

Pre-Renewal Swap Windows With Hard Cutoffs

Time-gated swap windows that open after a delivery and close 48 hours before the next renewal. After the cutoff, flavor selections lock and the order processes. Customers get a reminder before the cutoff, and your fulfillment team gets confirmed orders every cycle.

Production-Aligned Delivery Cycles

Delivery cycles built to match your brewing and bottling schedule: a 14-day cycle, a custom fortnightly window, or a production-triggered dispatch. Billing fires on the right date relative to dispatch.

Subscriber Self-Service Portal

Customers swap flavors, pause, skip, or cancel from a clean portal without contacting your support team. The portal enforces the swap cutoff automatically, so customers can only update within the window.

How We Built a Custom Flavor-Select Kombucha Subscription for Bitchin’ Boucha

The Situation

Bitchin’ Boucha needed a complete Shopify store built from scratch for its kombucha subscription. The model was specific: customers choose any 2 flavors from the range and receive 14 bottles per delivery (7 of each) on a 14-day cycle. They also needed to be able to swap flavors before each renewal, but only until 48 hours before billing.

What We Built

  • Full Shopify store built from the ground up
  • Custom flavor-select subscription flow using Recharge
  • Box logic: 2 flavors, 14 units total (7 of each) per delivery
  • 14-day delivery cycle tied to the production schedule
  • 48-hour pre-renewal swap window, with selections locked after the cutoff
  • Custom subscriber portal for flavor management
  • Automated renewal reminders before the swap cutoff closes

The Subscription Logic in Detail

The 48-hour swap window was the most complex part of the build. After each delivery, the window opens and customers are notified to review their next flavor selection. Forty-eight hours before the renewal date, the window closes automatically and the order locks with the current selection. The fulfillment team gets confirmed orders ahead of each batch, with no last-minute changes disrupting production.

The Result

A kombucha subscription store with logic built around the brand's production schedule. The 14-day cycle, flavor-split box, and time-gated swap window all run as code, not workarounds, which keeps the system reliable and easy to maintain as the business grows.

Why Codingkart

Why Kombucha Brands Choose Codingkart

We've built kombucha subscription logic from scratch

Flavor-split boxes, 14-day cycles, and 48-hour swap cutoffs don't come ready-made in a standard app. We built them as code on Recharge for Bitchin' Boucha, so we know what this type of build requires.

We build complete Shopify stores, not just subscription setups

Bitchin’ Boucha needed a store and a subscription system, and we delivered both. If you're starting fresh or migrating from another platform, we can handle the full build.

No plugin stacking

The swap cutoff, box rules, and delivery cycle are built as clean code, not several apps that conflict on update. Your subscription system keeps working when Shopify or Recharge releases an update.

We work on Shopify and Shopify Plus

That includes checkout extensions for brands that need custom logic in checkout. Whether you're starting on Shopify or planning to move to Plus, we build for where you're going.

FAQ

Common Questions About Kombucha Subscription Development on Shopify

Yes. We built a custom kombucha box subscription for Bitchin' Boucha on Shopify with Recharge, where customers choose any 2 flavors from the range and receive 14 units, 7 of each, per delivery. Flavor selections are stored against the subscription and can be updated before each renewal within the swap window.

Yes — and the swap is time-gated rather than open-ended. The window opens once a delivery has shipped and closes automatically 48 hours before the next renewal, at which point the selection locks and the order is released to fulfillment. Customers get a reminder before the cutoff, so they are not surprised by the lock.

Yes — that is exactly what the Bitchin’ Boucha build was. Store and subscription system were delivered together rather than bolting a subscription layer onto an existing theme, which is what let the flavor and swap logic sit properly inside the product and account pages instead of being worked around.

Building a kombucha subscription on Shopify typically takes 6–12 weeks, depending on the subscription model and level of customization required. The timeline may vary based on recurring billing, product and delivery options, customer account features, third-party integrations, and fulfillment requirements. We can provide a more accurate timeline after reviewing your specific subscription needs.

It depends on which parts you need: flavor selection, swap windows, a production-aligned cycle, a custom portal, or a full store. The scope review is free, and you get a clear scope, cost, and timeline before you commit to anything.
