Coffee Subscriptions
Coffee subscription development on Shopify is the process of building custom subscription systems for coffee brands: grind type and roast preference capture, delivery-aware billing, explorer box onboarding flows, and subscriber self-service portals. Standard subscription apps handle simple repeat orders well. Coffee subscriptions usually need logic those apps don't provide out of the box.
As a Shopify agency for coffee roasters and DTC coffee brands, we build these systems through custom Shopify subscription development, so preferences, billing, and delivery work together.

Coffee Subscriptions
Standard subscription apps are built for simple repeat orders. Coffee subscriptions are rarely simple.
A customer subscribes to whole bean, medium roast. Three weeks later they want fine grind. Out of the box, an app treats that as a product swap. When grind, roast, bag size, and frequency all depend on each other, a change needs to update the same subscription cleanly, without duplicate orders or billing surprises.
You want new customers to start with a tasting box and move to a full subscription after their first delivery, with their preferred roast and grind carried over. Standard trial settings rarely cover this two-stage flow, so customers fall through the gap and the recurring revenue goes with them.
Coffee is roasted to order. Charging a customer three days before their bag is roasted creates confusion and disputes. By default, apps bill on the anniversary of signup. Aligning charges with your roast and dispatch days takes rules built around your schedule.
Skip a delivery, pause for two weeks, change bag size, swap roast: these are normal requests from coffee subscribers. When the portal makes them difficult, customers don't call you. They cancel. A template portal covers the basics, not the way your coffee program works.

What We Build
Not app configurations. Custom subscription logic built around how your coffee business works.
Grind type, roast, bag size, and delivery frequency are captured at signup and stored against the subscription. Customers can update them at any time without breaking billing or creating duplicates. We built this for Driftaway Coffee: whole bean to fine grind, 8oz to 5lb bags, and prepay billing options, on Shopify with Appstle.
New customers start with a tasting box. After delivery, they are prompted to move to a full recurring subscription with their preferred roast and grind already selected. There is no re-entering payment details and no new checkout.
Billing triggers tied to your roast and dispatch schedule, not to the date a customer happened to sign up. Customers are charged when it makes sense relative to their shipment, which means fewer billing disputes and fewer confused support emails.
Pause, skip, swap roast, change grind, update bag size: all handled from a custom subscriber portal. Customers manage their own subscription without contacting support, and your operations stay orderly.
Real Coffee Subscription Build
Shopify Migration · 8+ Year Partnership
Without a single missed renewal.
Driftaway Coffee had run its subscription business on WooCommerce for years. The system had grown complex: preference-based coffee subscriptions with grind type, size, billing frequency, and an Explorer Box onboarding flow. It was getting harder to manage, and they needed to move to Shopify without disrupting thousands of active subscribers mid-cycle.
We migrated the full subscriber base to Shopify with Appstle as the subscription engine. The custom product page handles grind type (Whole Bean, Fine, Medium, Coarse), bag size from 8oz to 5lb, billing frequency with prepay discounts, and the choice between an Explorer Box and a full-size bag. Today's price and the renewal price both display correctly at checkout, so customers always know what they're committing to.
Driftaway's custom subscription page handles grind type, bag size, billing frequency, and Explorer Box onboarding as a single subscription unit on Shopify with Appstle.
Why Codingkart
The Driftaway build was not a plugin configuration. It was custom subscription logic for grind type, roast, bag size, and billing models, plus a migration of 5,000 active subscribers. We know what breaks at scale because we have already fixed it.
That includes checkout extensions for brands that need custom billing logic or disclosure text in checkout. If you're on Plus or planning to move there, we know how the platform works at that level.
We don't bolt five apps together and hope they don't conflict. We build what your coffee subscription needs as clean, maintainable code, so it keeps working when Shopify updates or your product range changes.
We've worked with Driftaway Coffee for over eight years. Coffee subscription businesses evolve: new roasts, new markets, seasonal offerings, fulfillment changes. We stay and develop the system with you.
How Projects Run
Five steps. No surprises.
We map your product options, billing logic, roast schedule, and what your current setup cannot handle.
We audit your existing apps, integrations, and theme before writing a line of code.
Clear scope, clear cost, clear timeline. What we'll build, how it works, and what it integrates with.
Everything is tested in staging before it touches your live store or active subscribers.
We manage the go-live and stay available during the post-launch period.
FAQ
Yes. This is what we built for Driftaway Coffee: Whole Bean, Fine, Medium, and Coarse grind options, bag sizes from 8oz to 5lb, and billing frequency with prepay discounts, all handled as a single subscription unit. Customers can update preferences without breaking their billing.
Yes. We migrated 5,000 active Driftaway subscribers from WooCommerce to Shopify in two weeks without a single missed renewal. Preferences, billing cycles, and mid-cycle subscription states all carry across — customers do not need to re-subscribe or re-enter payment details.
Yes. App-to-app migrations are a routine part of our work — Recharge, Skio, Bold, and the rest. We map your existing subscription contracts, billing schedules, and customer preferences onto the new engine, run the whole migration on staging first, and cut over without interrupting active renewals.
Driftaway Coffee's migration of 5,000 subscribers took two weeks. A new build depends on how much custom logic you need. You get a timeline with your scope.
It depends on which parts you need: a preference flow, an explorer box, billing rules, a custom portal, or a migration. The scope review is free, and you get a clear scope, cost, and timeline before you commit to anything.
