WooCommerce to Shopify Migration

WooCommerce to Shopify Migration for Subscription Stores

WooCommerce to Shopify migration for subscription stores is the process of moving an active subscription business from WooCommerce to Shopify while preserving subscriber records, billing continuity, payment vaults, and order history. It is different from a standard store migration, because active subscribers have live billing cycles. Interrupt them and you get missed renewals, failed charges, and churn.

A migration tool moves your products and orders. It can't move your active subscribers, transfer payment vaults, or keep billing running through the cutover. That takes a specialist WooCommerce to Shopify migration agency, and we've done it at scale.

  • You run a subscription store on WooCommerce and want to move to Shopify
  • You have active subscribers with live billing cycles that cannot be interrupted
  • You need payment vaults transferred so subscribers don't re-enter card details
  • You want zero missed renewals during the cutover window
  • You need the migration managed by someone who has done it before at scale

Why Subscription Migrations Are Different

Why You Can't Use a Migration Tool When You Have Active Subscribers

Standard migration tools move products, orders, and customer records. None of them handle what makes a subscription migration difficult.

Payment vaults can't be exported or moved manually

Your subscribers' saved payment methods sit in encrypted vaults held by your payment processor, such as Stripe or Braintree. You can't download them or move them yourself, and a migration tool can't either. They can only be transferred from processor to processor. Without that coordinated transfer, every subscriber has to re-enter their card details, and many won't.

Billing cycles don't pause while you migrate

Every subscriber has a next renewal date. During the cutover both platforms are partly active, and if that window isn't managed precisely, renewals fire on the wrong platform or on neither. At 5,000 subscribers, even a 1% miss rate is 50 failed orders.

Custom WooCommerce subscription logic doesn't translate directly

WooCommerce Subscriptions handles billing rules, trial periods, synchronized renewals, and custom intervals in ways that don't map directly to Recharge or Appstle. Custom code built on top of it, such as delivery rules, product selection logic, and subscriber portals, has to be rebuilt, not migrated. A tool won't tell you what needs rebuilding. We will.

A data export doesn't guarantee subscriber data integrity

An export gives you a file. It doesn't confirm that every subscriber record is complete and linked to the right product, billing frequency, and delivery address. Mapping errors at subscriber scale are expensive to find and fix once the migration is live.

What Gets Migrated

Everything We Move from WooCommerce to Shopify

Our WooCommerce migration services cover the complete move, not just products and orders.

  • Active Subscriber Records

Subscription plan, billing frequency, next renewal date, delivery address, product selection, and custom attributes

  • Payment Vaults

Coordinated transfer with your payment processor, so subscribers don't re-enter card details

  • Products and Variants

All products, variants, images, descriptions, and pricing, mapped to Shopify's product structure

  • Order History

Past orders linked to customer records, for lifetime value reporting and subscriber history

  • Customer Accounts

Customer records, contact details, and account history. Passwords can't be moved between platforms, so customers reactivate their accounts on Shopify.

  • Subscription Logic

Billing rules, delivery intervals, trial periods, and custom logic rebuilt on your Shopify subscription app

Migration Tool vs Specialist Agency

What a Migration Tool Does, and What It Doesn't

Automated migration tools are built for standard stores. Subscription stores have requirements they can't handle.

How We Migrated 5,000 Driftaway Coffee Subscribers from WooCommerce to Shopify Plus

The Situation

Driftaway Coffee had 5,000 active coffee subscribers on WooCommerce, and subscriptions were its main source of revenue. Every subscriber had a live billing cycle, a saved payment method, and a grind preference and bag size tied to their account. Driftaway needed to move to Shopify Plus without a single missed renewal and without asking subscribers to re-enter payment details.

What We Migrated and Built

  • 5,000 active subscriber records: plans, frequencies, renewal dates, and delivery addresses
  • Full product catalog, including subscription variants (grind type, bag size, roast profile)
  • Complete order history linked to customer accounts
  • Payment vault transfer, coordinated with the payment processor
  • Custom subscription logic rebuilt on Appstle on Shopify Plus
  • Explorer box flow and grind and size selection rebuilt on Shopify
  • Billing monitored through the first full renewal cycle

The Billing Cutover

The critical phase was the cutover: the window where WooCommerce billing had to stop and Shopify billing had to start with no gap. We mapped every subscriber's next renewal date before the migration began and timed the cutover to minimize the renewals due during the transition. Once Shopify billing was live and verified, WooCommerce was decommissioned. We monitored the first renewal cycle in real time to catch edge cases before subscribers saw them.

The Result

5,000 active subscribers moved from WooCommerce to Shopify Plus in two weeks with zero missed renewals. No subscriber had to take any action. Driftaway Coffee is still a Codingkart client more than 8 years later, and we continue to maintain and develop its Shopify subscription system.

Why Codingkart

Why Subscription Brands Choose Codingkart

We've migrated 5,000 active subscribers with zero missed renewals

The Driftaway Coffee migration is a completed project with a named client and a live store you can check. We know what a subscription migration needs at scale because we have delivered one.

We manage the billing cutover, the part most agencies avoid

Most agencies handle the data. The cutover is what separates a clean migration from a failed one: pausing WooCommerce billing, transferring payment vaults, activating Shopify billing, and monitoring the first cycle. We plan it from day one.

We rebuild subscription logic, not just move data

Custom delivery rules, product selection flows, and subscriber portals have to be rebuilt on your Shopify subscription app. We scope that rebuild as part of the migration, so it isn't a second project you discover after the data has moved.

We stay after go-live

The first billing cycle after a migration always surfaces edge cases: renewal dates that fell in the cutover window, vault transfers that need follow-up, and logic that behaves differently in production. We are there for all of it. We have worked with Driftaway Coffee for more than 8 years since their migration.

How Migrations Run

How We Migrate a WooCommerce Subscription Store to Shopify

Five steps. The billing cutover is planned from day one, not figured out at go-live.

  1. Audit your WooCommerce setup

We map subscribers, billing cycles, payment processor, custom logic, and everything that needs to move or be rebuilt.

  2. Design the Shopify build

We plan the Shopify store architecture, select the right subscription app, and scope the subscription logic rebuild.

  3. Build and test on staging

The Shopify store and subscription system are built and tested with a sample of migrated data before any live migration begins.

  4. Execute the billing cutover

We pause WooCommerce billing, transfer payment vaults, migrate subscriber records, and activate Shopify billing in a managed cutover window.

  5. Monitor post-migration billing

We monitor the first full renewal cycle on Shopify and resolve any edge cases before they reach subscribers.

FAQ

WooCommerce to Shopify Migration: Common Questions

Yes, we did exactly that for Driftaway Coffee, moving 5,000 active subscribers with zero missed renewals. We map every subscriber's next renewal date before anything moves, then choose a cutover window that catches the fewest live renewals. WooCommerce billing is paused, vaults and records transfer, Shopify billing is verified before it goes live, and the first cycle is watched in real time.

Usually Appstle or Recharge, decided during the audit rather than before it. Driftaway Coffee moved onto Appstle on Shopify Plus. What settles it is how much of your WooCommerce Subscriptions logic has to be rebuilt: billing rules, delivery intervals, trial periods and any custom portal work map onto the two apps differently. We have no revenue-share arrangement with either, so the recommendation follows your subscription model.

There are four: payment vaults that are not transferred, renewals that fall inside the cutover window, custom subscription logic that does not carry over, and subscriber records that are mapped incorrectly. Each one leads to failed charges or cancellations, which is why we plan the billing cutover before anything else.

Driftaway Coffee's migration of 5,000 subscribers took two weeks. Your timeline depends on how many subscribers you have and how much custom logic has to be rebuilt. You get a timeline with your scope.

It depends on your subscriber count, your payment processor, and how much custom WooCommerce logic has to be rebuilt on Shopify. The scope review is free, and you get a clear scope and price before you commit to anything.
