Clothing Subscription Development on Shopify

Clothing subscription development on Shopify is the process of building custom subscription systems for apparel brands: multi-step subscription wizards, size and color selection, quantity planning, cross-sell flows, and subscriber portals. Standard subscription apps handle simple repeat orders well. A clothing subscription is a set of linked choices (size, colors, quantity, add-ons), and it needs a guided setup flow that those apps don't provide out of the box.

We build these systems as custom Shopify subscription development for apparel, underwear, and sock brands, so customers set up size, color, quantity, and add-ons in one guided flow and are billed once.

  • You sell clothing on Shopify and subscriptions are core to your revenue
  • Customers need to pick size, color, and quantity before the subscription starts
  • You want to offer add-ons like socks inside the same subscription, billed as one unit
  • Subscribers need to update size or color without cancelling and re-subscribing
  • Your subscription app can't handle the variant and quantity logic you need without workarounds

The Real Problem

Where Standard Subscription Apps Fall Short for Clothing Brands

Subscription apps are built around one product on a repeat schedule. A clothing subscription is several linked choices, and that is where the standard setup runs out.

Size and color are a guided choice, not a dropdown

A clothing subscriber needs to choose a size, pick colors, and set a quantity before the subscription starts. Out of the box, subscription apps offer this as variant dropdowns on a product page. Walking a customer through those choices step by step, with a size guide at the right moment, takes custom development.

Quantity is something the customer chooses

Your subscriber wants 2 pairs every 2 months, or 6. The quantity changes the price, the color mix, and what ships. Making it a step in the setup flow, tied to the rest of the customer's choices, is custom logic.

Add-ons should bill with the subscription, not beside it

You want to offer socks during the underwear setup flow. If the add-on ends up as a second subscription, you get two billing events, two orders, and extra work for something that should be simple. It should bill, renew, and ship as part of the same order.

Changing size or color shouldn't mean starting over

A customer changes size or wants different colors next time. A standard portal lets them swap a single product. It is not built for a subscription made of several choices at once, and when updating feels like too much work, subscribers cancel instead.

Standard App vs Custom Build

What a Standard App Does Out of the Box, and What We Build

Where a standard subscription app setup stops, and what a custom build adds for clothing.

Comparison of a standard subscription app versus custom Shopify subscription development for clothing brands
Capability Standard subscription app, out of the box Custom development (Codingkart)
Multi-step subscription wizard (size, quantity and color, cross-sell) Not included Fully custom
Quantity chosen inside the setup flow Quantity field on the product page A step in the wizard
Color selection Variant dropdown, no guidance Guided selection flow
Cross-sell add-on Often a separate subscription One billing event
Updating size, colors, and quantity on an active subscription One product at a time One update flow in the portal

What We Build

What We Build for Clothing and Apparel Subscriptions

Custom subscription systems that guide customers through their choices and handle the complexity apparel subscriptions involve.

Multi-Step Subscription Wizard

A guided setup flow that walks customers through each decision one step at a time: size, quantity, color, frequency, and cross-sell. We built a 3-step wizard for Undy.dk on Shopify Plus with Appstle. It turns a complex set of choices into a clear, guided experience.

Size and Color Selection Logic

Size, color, and quantity are captured as subscription attributes, not just as order variants. They are stored against the subscriber record and can be updated without cancelling. When a customer needs a different size next cycle, they change it in their portal and it applies to the next delivery.

Cross-Sell Integration Within the Subscription

Add-ons such as socks and accessories are added to the subscription during setup, not as separate subscriptions. One billing event, one order, one renewal. On Undy.dk, subscribers add socks at step 3, and underwear plus socks process as a single subscription each cycle.

Subscriber Self-Service Portal

Subscribers can update their size, swap colors, adjust quantity, add or remove the cross-sell product, pause, skip, or cancel from a custom portal built for clothing subscriptions. Changes apply to the next cycle without billing errors.

How We Built Undy.dk's Custom Subscription Wizard on Shopify Plus

The Situation

Undy.dk sells bamboo underwear subscriptions in Denmark. They needed a new Shopify Plus store with a custom subscription wizard that guides customers through their size, how many pairs they want every 2 months, their color preference (solid or printed), and whether to add socks. A standard subscription app setup couldn't handle this multi-step, multi-variant flow cleanly.

What We Built

  • Full Shopify Plus store built from the ground up
  • 3-step custom subscription wizard using Appstle
  • Step 1: Size selection (S to 3XL) with size guide link
  • Step 2: Quantity (2, 4, or 6 pairs), color selection (solid or printed), delivery every 2 months
  • Step 3: Sock cross-sell, added to the subscription as a single billing unit
  • All selections stored as subscription attributes, updateable without cancellation
  • Custom subscriber portal for managing all subscription details

The Wizard Flow in Detail

The subscription starts with the 3-step wizard: pick a size, choose quantity and color, then decide whether to add socks. Socks bill inside the same subscription, with no separate charge and no separate shipment. The whole flow runs on Shopify Plus with Appstle, not through a third-party cart app.

The Result

A clothing subscription store with 4,500 active subscribers, running on Shopify Plus with Appstle. The 3-step wizard makes setup simple and guided, and billing everything as a single unit keeps fulfillment and operations manageable as subscriber volume grows.

Why Codingkart

Why Clothing Brands Choose Codingkart

We built a clothing subscription wizard that serves 4,500 subscribers

Undy.dk was a fresh Shopify Plus store with a 3-step custom subscription wizard, multi-variant selection logic, and a cross-sell integration. It now has 4,500 active subscribers.

We work on Shopify and Shopify Plus

Undy.dk runs on Shopify Plus with Appstle. We also build checkout extensions for brands that need custom logic, sizing tools, or personalization in checkout.

No plugin stacking

The wizard, variant logic, and cross-sell are built as clean, maintainable code, not several apps bolted together. Your subscription system keeps working when Shopify or Appstle releases updates.

Long-term build, not a one-off project

Clothing subscriptions change: new colors, new products, new markets. We build systems that are maintainable and extensible, so your subscription logic can change with your range without a rebuild.

How We Build a Clothing Subscription on Shopify

Five steps. No surprises.

  1. Understand your subscription model

  2. Review your Shopify setup

We audit your existing store or plan the fresh build before writing any code.

  3. Propose a technical approach

Clear scope, clear cost, clear timeline. Wizard flow, variant logic, and portal spec are all defined upfront.

  4. Build and test on staging

All wizard steps, variant selection, and cross-sell flows are tested in staging before going live.

  5. Launch and support

We manage the go-live and stay available during the post-launch period.

FAQ

Clothing Subscriptions on Shopify: Common Questions

Yes. We built exactly this for Undy.dk on Shopify Plus with Appstle. Customers select their size, choose how many pairs they want every 2 months, pick their colors, and add cross-sell products like socks. All selections are stored against the subscription and can be updated without breaking billing.

Yes — the Undy.dk store was built on Shopify Plus from the ground up, including the subscription wizard and the subscriber portal. Working at the Plus level also opens up Checkout Extensions, which is where sizing tools, personalization and custom cross-sell pricing can live natively in checkout rather than being bolted on by a third-party cart app. If you are on Plus or planning to move there, we build to that level.

Undy.dk runs on Appstle, but the app is only the billing engine — the wizard, the variant logic and the cross-sell handling are custom code we wrote around it. We pick the subscription app to fit the build rather than designing the build around one app, and we do not stack several apps to cover gaps. That is what keeps the system stable when Shopify or the app ships an update.

Launching a clothing subscription on Shopify typically takes 6–12 weeks, depending on the level of customization required. The timeline may vary based on subscription features, product and customer flows, design, third-party integrations, and payment or fulfillment requirements. We can provide a more accurate timeline after reviewing your specific subscription model and requirements.

It depends on how many steps your setup flow has, whether you need a new store or are adding to an existing one, and how much portal customization you want. The scope review is free, and you get a clear scope, cost, and timeline before you commit to anything.
